November 2020 LCA Updates

11/17/2020

Greetings, LCA members!

My name is Rita Sperry and I am honored to be stepping into the role of President of the Learning Communities Association (LCA) for the 2020-2021 session. Here are a few LCA updates for our membership.

Outgoing LCA Council Members

I want to share my most humble appreciation for our outgoing President, Richie Gebauer, of Cabrini University. It has been an honor to work alongside Richie during the past few years as he has led the LCA so capably despite having to take on the role a little earlier than planned and needing to find new ways to serve our members during this unprecedented time. I am quite aware that I have big shoes to fill and I am definitely grateful that he will still be serving on the LCA Council in the Past President role this year!

Thanks also go to our outgoing Past President, Janine Graziano (Kingsborough Community College) and At-Large Council members, Kyle Holtman (Iowa State University) and Michelle Guzman-Armijo (Dona Aña Community College). All three have provided great service and leadership to the LCA over the past several years. If any of you are fortunate to work with any of these three amazing individuals, count yourself blessed.

Incoming LCA Council Members

The 2020-2021 LCA Council listing can be found on our LCA website here.

I am happy to announce that David Finley (Chandler-Gilbert Community College) has been selected as our President-Elect, meaning that he will take over as President of the LCA for the 2021-2022 term. Our new At-Large Council members are Liza Erpelo (Skyline College) and Shemeka Phipps (University of Houston), each of whom will be serving three-year terms.

I am thrilled to be working with this Council this year. If you are interested in becoming a member of the LCA Council in the future, the Call for Nominations for the 2021-2022 Council will go out in Summer 2021.

LCA Website Update

Our LCA website, http://lcassociation.org, has been recently updated. If you haven’t checked it out recently, make sure to do so. Expect to see more updates and LC resources added to the website in 2021!

LCA Listserv

All LCA members are encouraged to subscribe to the listserv we share with the Washington Center here if you have not already done so. This listserv is used to share information about the LCA and the Washington Center related to our LC work, and all listserv members are also encouraged to post questions, resources, and job ads that are relevant to LCA membership.

What To Look Forward To In 2021?

Over the next year, the LCA will continue to provide support for LC practitioners via our webinars, virtual social hours, and professional mentorship program. We also will be reviewing the LCA's current definition of “learning communities” to ensure that it aligns with current practice and addresses the wide variety of shapes and structures of LCs across our institutions. If you are interested in participating in any of these projects (leading a webinar or social hour, serving as a mentor, etc), or have additional suggestions, please email us at learningcommunitiesassociation@gmail.com.

We hope to be able to see many of you in Corpus Christi, Texas, for the National Learning Communities Conference on October 21-23, 2021. The Call for Proposals will go out in February and the LCA will be putting its own call out for our inaugural Outstanding Learning Community Advocate Award to be presented at the NLCC in Corpus Christi. Stay tuned for more information on the Outstanding Learning Community Advocate Award in early 2021!

Invite Your Colleagues to Join Us!

Membership in the LCA is still free. Please spread the word and encourage your LC colleagues to join the LCA. For a quick and easy description of the benefits of membership, see here. For those of you on Facebook, we also have a group for LCA members here.

Happy Holidays, everyone!

  • The LCA's growth over the past 2 years would not have been possible without the leadership of its dedicated council comprised of volunteers who offer their time and their expertise in the area of learning community growth and development to support LCA members and develop a vision for the future of this national organization. Thanks to these contributing members, the LCA continues to offer its members professional development opportunities, various spaces to network with learning community colleagues both nationally and internationally, and various resources to enhance the work occurring on individual campuses.

  • Each fall, the LCA's Nominations Committee puts forth a "Call to Nominations" to membership for LCA Council vacancies.  The 2018-2019 LCA Council had vacancies for the position of President-Elect and three at-large council seats. These nominees would be filling vacancies left by Past President Carlos Huerta, Texas A&M University, Corpus Christi, and At-Large Council Members Jennifer Leptien, Iowa State University, and Pam Person, University of Cincinnati.  These council members have been with the LCA since its inception and have each worked diligently to create this national organization for learning community professionals.

  • The Association is pleased to welcome our incoming professional leaders to these positions on the 2018-2019 LCA Council, beginning on November 10th.

  • President Elect
    Richie Gebauer, Cabrini University
    At-Large Council Members
    Daniel Collins, Guttman Community College
    Sara Exner, University of Louisville
    Kyle Holtman, Iowa State University

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming our elected leaders!
