Learning Communities in Times of Crisis

The world in which we find ourselves leading, learning and teaching has dramatically changed over the last several months.  The uncertainty that surrounds us has implications for how we approach our work, our relationships, and our emotional and psychological condition. During our time together, we will explore some of the dynamics of the uncertain times in which we find ourselves, how you are adapting, and approaches to maintaining professional and personal well-being.

Abriendo Puertas: Keeping Doors Open and Fostering Community Online

Do you teach a linked LC course that suddenly had to go online? Are you wondering how to maintain a sense of community and belonging in an asynchronous class? Marianne and Adam are experimenting with many strategies in their online learning community, Abriendo Puertas. They will share the tools, practices, and pedagogies that they hope are keeping their LC equitable, engaging, and empowering. You will leave the session not only with practical strategies but also with inspiration to reimagine your course, students, and teaching.

Engaging Students Through Living-Learning Communities During Challenging Times

Living-learning communities exist to bridge students' academic and social spaces while also building community.  These communities, when thoughtfully designed, also offer collaboration and communication avenues for academic affairs and housing in order to better support students.  Now, as we face the Covid-19 global pandemic, questions abound about the role of living-learning communities and residential colleges in sustaining community when campuses are closed or only partially open and all are social distancing.

In this session, we will discuss the challenges faced by living-learning communities navigating the global pandemic.  With some institutions navigating virtual classes, others navigating closed residence halls, and some navigating both, we will unpack the difficulties faced by faculty and administrators during this time and illustrate why living-learning communities and residential colleges can be the right structure to help students stay engaged while staying away.  Strategies for building community in a socially distanced or virtual manner will be elicited and discussed.

What Makes High-Quality HIPs? Insights to Enhance Quality and Ensure Equity

The value of high-impact practices (HIPs) such as service-learning, learning communities, and undergraduate research is well-established, yet simply offering such activities does not guarantee high-quality learning or even participation. To move beyond the “HIP checklist”, the Assessing Quality and Equity in HIPs project is comprehensively examining students’ experiences and satisfaction in HIPs to derive practical insights about enhancing quality and ensuring equity. This session will highlight overall findings about HIPs, and then focus in on what we’ve learned about quality and equity in learning communities.

Embracing Anti-racist Practices in Learning Communities

“One either allows racial inequities to persevere, as a racist, or confronts racial inequities, as an antiracist. There is not in between safe space of ‘not racist.’ The claim of ‘not racist’ neutrality is a mask for racism.”
 - Ibram X Kendi, How to Be an Antiracist
After decades of research and interventions, colleges and universities have made insufficient progress in closing achievement gaps for students from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. The persistent inequity experienced by BIPOC students continues to fuel student engagement in #blacklivesmatter and other movements demanding change on our campuses. Many of us know from experience that learning communities can be equity-producing with potential to bridge persistent achievement gaps. But, are we realizing that potential or are we allowing racial inequities to persevere?  How can the learning community programs we lead and teach explicitly respond to Kendi’s call to confront racial inequities, as an anti-racist? In this facilitated panel, we will explore how we might apply an explicitly anti-racist lens to our work.
